Broker feedback has been very positive: Pinpoint UK’s Powell

In our latest Reinsurance News video interview, we spoke with Shevawn Barder, Founder and CEO of AM Specialty Insurance Company (ASIC), and Darren Powell, CUO of Pinpoint UK, about their plans for the new MGA and progress as ASIC expands beyond North America into the London and UK specialty market.

The full interview, available to watch for free, offers insight into Pinpoint UK—an FCA-approved MGA headquartered in London—established by ASIC following its acquisition of Pinpoint Insurance Solutions.

Part of the discussion focused on broker relationships, with Powell highlighting that everything Pinpoint UK does is via brokers: “Since launching in September, we’ve had several brokers visit to understand our offerings, and the response has been very positive.

“Brokers want to work with people who are responsive and provide excellent service. Our team has longstanding relationships in the London market, and the feedback has exceeded expectations. There is a lot of loyalty when you deliver what you promise efficiently. We have a specific appetite and aim to serve brokers in areas where they might not be getting the level of service they need, from small family businesses to major brokers.”

Barder emphasised their focus on quality, communication, and feedback: “We can provide data back to brokers to speed up communication, which we believe is very valuable. We enjoy partnering with brokers and appreciate the unique breadth of business available in the London market to work with a wide range of brokers and build our presence.”

When asked about growth and expansion goals over the next 12 to 24 months and how success will be measured, Barder stated: “Our main focus is profit. We are not chasing volume or external investment pressure. We want to work with underwriters who share in the profit experience, rewarding quality.

“We see ourselves as a carefully crafted operation focused on long-term community building, not rapid expansion. Our goal is to create a sustainable model that can handle market cycles. The key in insurance is that once you communicate your professionalism and expectations clearly, the right partners will come to you. We believe in hiring highly skilled people who want to build for the future.”

Powell added that Pinpoint UK holds a unique position as both an MGA and a carrier. While they write business on behalf of ASIC in the US, they also place risks for third-party insurers within the London market. He stressed the importance of long-term partnerships built around shared profitability.
