Markel Insurance, the insurance arm of Markel Group Inc., has introduced a new Construction & Engineering practice within its international division.

""This launch begins with the introduction of Construction All Risks (CAR) and Erection All Risks (EAR) solutions for clients around the world, aimed at supporting a wide range of project needs while strengthening Markel’s position across construction and energy markets.

The announcement features three key specialists within the new practice: Anna Woolley, Director – Construction at Markel International; Keely Madden, Head of Erection All Risk – Construction at Markel International; and Simon Marshall, Engineer at Markel International.

The CAR product provides comprehensive protection for projects of all sizes, including retail developments, healthcare facilities, data centres, housing projects and civil engineering works.

The EAR offering is designed for clients in the energy and industrial sectors, particularly those managing the construction and installation of major industrial systems and equipment. Both products will be available globally with limits of up to US$50 million on a probable maximum loss basis, giving clients direct access to coverage tailored to the risks inherent in construction and engineering environments.

To guide the development of the practice, Markel has appointed Anna Woolley as Director – Construction. Based in London and reporting to Rohan Davies, Managing Director – London Market, she will lead the team, develop an international portfolio and support profitable expansion, new ideas and deeper engagement with brokers and clients.

Joining her is Keely Madden as Head of Erection All Risk – Construction, who will focus on shaping the EAR portfolio through underwriting a varied and high-quality book of business, building new client and broker relationships and contributing to risk management and innovation efforts. Also part of the team is Simon Marshall, whose role as Engineer will involve advising underwriters on risk selection, supporting analysis of emerging technologies and conducting site visits to help clients strengthen their risk management approaches.

Woolley shared her thoughts on her appointment, stating: “Markel is well known as a leading insurer, with a longstanding presence and well-established reputation in the market, and so I’m delighted to be joining to lead the new Construction & Engineering practice.

“From natural disasters and extreme weather to equipment failure and site damage, clients face a wide range of risks in the construction and engineering phases. Having a long-term partner who’s committed to helping clients mitigate, respond to and recover from these is essential, and Markel’s new practice will aim to do just that.”

Rohan Davies, Managing Director – London Market, added: “Over the next five years, the world will need to more than triple its sustainable energy capacity to meet the latest climate targets, meaning continued rapid expansion of the transition economy.

“The insurance industry will play an essential role in transferring and mitigating the risks associated with this transition, and Markel’s new Construction & Engineering practice will allow us to go beyond our well-established operational risk policies, to offer support to clients with these projects from conception.

“I’m delighted to have Anna, Keely and Simon on board as we launch our new practice. Between them, they bring extensive sector knowledge, strong market relationships and a thorough understanding of our clients’ needs, and I’m confident that our market-leading talent will help position Markel as a leading insurer in the construction and engineering space.”

Woolley enters the role with 17 years of London Market underwriting experience, including senior positions across construction and energy. Her previous roles include serving as Head of Construction at AXIS Capital and holding senior posts at G-Cube Insurance, CNA Hardy and Zurich Insurance.

Madden joins from AXIS Capital, where she worked as Senior Underwriter, Construction, following seven years at RSA in Power, Engineering and Energy, along with earlier broking positions at Aon, HSBC Insurance Brokers, Willis and JLT.

Marshall contributes three decades of industry expertise, most recently as a Construction Engineer at AXIS Capital, following earlier roles at Integra Risk Services, Willis, Factory Mutual, Zurich Global Energy, Millennium Consortium and CSL Engineering.
