The Travelers Companies has reported Q3 2025 net income of $1.888 billion, up 50% from the same period of 2024, with a consolidated combined ratio of 87.3%.

""The firm also reported core income of $1.867 billion for Q3 2025, a 53% increase from $1.218 billion in Q3 2024.

According to Travelers, the rise in core income was driven primarily by lower catastrophe losses, which fell to $402 million pre-tax from $939 million a year earlier, along with higher underlying underwriting gains and increased net investment income.

These positives were reportedly partially offset by lower net favourable prior-year reserve development.

Travelers’ underwriting income in Q3 2025 totalled $1.4 billion pre-tax, more than double the amount reported in the prior-year period, reflecting the aforementioned reduced catastrophe losses and stronger underlying underwriting results.

“The underlying result was driven by higher net earned premiums and an underlying combined ratio that improved to an exceptional 83.9%. Underwriting income was higher in all three segments,” Alan Schnitzer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, explained.

He continued, “Our high-quality investment portfolio continued to perform well, generating after-tax net investment income of $850 million, up 15%. During the quarter, we returned almost $900 million of excess capital to shareholders, including $628 million of share repurchases.”

Notably, Travelers grew net written premiums to $11.5 billion in Q3 2025, supported by strong execution across its field organisation.

In Business Insurance, net written premiums rose 3% to $5.7 billion, driven by 4% growth in the domestic business.

The firm’s Middle Market and Select Accounts small commercial businesses grew 7% and 4%, respectively. Renewal premium change of 7.1% and retention of 85% both remained strong.

In Bond & Specialty Insurance, net written premiums increased to $1.1 billion, reflecting higher renewal premium change and continued strong retention of 87% in Travelers’ management liability business. Net written premiums in its surety business also remained strong.

In Personal Insurance, net written premiums totalled $4.7 billion, supported by a strong renewal premium change in the Homeowners business.

Schnitzer concluded, “We are very pleased to report another quarter of excellent results. Looking ahead, this strong momentum, the benefit of scale, and the compelling opportunities before us give us great confidence in the outlook for our business.”

Readers may recall that Travelers returned to an underwriting gain in Q2 2025, rebounding from a Q1 loss that was driven by a $2.27 billion catastrophe charge.
